Location and Size

Lake Tyler and Lake Tyler East, located adjacent to each other and connected via a canal, are located just east of Tyler, Texas. These are the largest lakes in the Tyler area in addition to Lake Palestine.

Lake Tyler, built in 1949, covers 2,400 surface acres and serves as the major source of water supply to the Tyler metro area.

Lake Tyler also serves as a major recreation center for this area, under strict sanitary controls. The Lake Tyler Department maintains six park areas adjacent to the lake.

Lake Tyler is located on Prairie Creek, a tributary of Mud Creek, and lies in the Angelina River watershed.

It has storage capacity of over 15 billion gallons (43,500 acre feet) at spillway elevation and has an average depth of 17.6 feet. It has a watershed area of 42 square miles (27,000 acres).

Access to Lake Tyler

The City of Tyler operates five boat ramps and several public parks on the shores of these lakes.

The Lake Tyler Marina, located on Lake Tyler West in Concession Area #1, charges a small fee to launch; all other ramps are free. Fritz & Opal's Barge, on the water near Old #2, offers fishing access for a fee, and bank access is available at several locations.

Two public ramps and a county-maintained boat launch offer access to Lake Tyler East. Primitive camping is allowed in all city parks on a first-come, first-serve basis.

HGTV Dream Home

Lake Tyler was the location of the HGTV Dream Home contest in 2005.

The 6,500 square feet house was occupied for a couple of years by the winner of the contest, but was was sold at public auction in January, 2008, for $1.3 million.
